Puppy Guide

Your first days at home with your new puppy, most puppies go off their food for a few days after going to a new environment, this a big time for them. Brothers and sisters are not there to add the usual stimulus to the days proceedings, bonding with the new family is taking place and will probably take about a fortnight to complete. No need to rush this, each puppy is different and to put undue pressure on at this stage may have an adverse effect. Each time the puppy comes to you of its own free will, give lavish praise.

Be patient, be kind, do not fuss and most of all do not keep offering different kinds of food in the hope that you will strike the thing he likes, this only causes bad eating habits.

First of all cut the food supply down a little, offer the same diet as he has been used to but in smaller amounts at each meal - if he does not eat after say 10 minutes, remove the dish and wait until the next meal, this meal should be the scheduled meal, a little smaller (not the one he left before).

Continue to do this over the next few days until he is eating everything that is put in front of them, do not make the mistake of increasing the meals too quickly, a little at a time is good.

To increase palatability of the meal - a little honey spread on the plate helps, you can also try mixing the mince with dry Tukkathyme, make into very small balls, pour over a little goats milk and honey. If you are feeding bone, and we hope that you do, soak in hot water then roll in Tukkathyme, do not let the bones replace other meals, bones should be fed after meals - not on an empty stomach. Enjoy!
